Christmas Movies

Best Christmas family Comedy: ElfThere’s little bit of holiday humor for the parents, talking animals and Christmas spirit for the kids, and a whole lot of fun for everyone! For those jolly ol’ friends who’ve been living under a rock, here’s a brief synopsis of the story: Buddy, an naive, kind-hearted ‘elf,’ journeys to New York in search of his long-lost father. Go watch it for goodness’ sake! 5/5 buddiesBest Christmas Musical: White ChristmasThis sweet honeybun of a movie is for those of us with an appetite for Christmas cheer. Singing along, or just listening along, White Christmas is a classic merry musical. For all the other hopeless romantics out there, this romantic tale will carry you until the realization that you still have no one to kiss when the ball drops this New Year.Best Artsy Christmas Movie: Nightmare Before ChristmasThe Nightmare Before Christmas’ incredibly stunning visuals, a score that pulls at the heart, and impressive counterbalancing tones of horror and happy holiday make for an unconventional but undeniably beautiful twisted fairy tale. Watch this Christmas, or Halloween, or anytime of year-- every time of year.Best Christmas Movie That Isn’t Actually a Christmas Movie but Takes Place During Christmas Season: Die HardSEVERUS SNAPE! Yes, our beloved Mr.Rickman is the (inevitably lovable) villain of this action-packed film, Die Hard. Take the elevator to the 30th floor of the Nakatomi building and you just might find yourself being taken hostage! I’m not usually one for the bang, bang, shoot-em-up movies, but the admirable cast and characters have a hold of me. Oh, and there’s Christmas lights, so it’s a Christmas movie and I can put it on this list.My 12-year-old Sister’s Favorite Christmas Movie: Dr.Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole ChristmasNOT the live-action one, even though we all love Jim Carrey. The 1966 classic, Dr.Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas, brings Dr.Seuss’ vivid storybook to another exciting, colorful level and will make your heart grow 100 times its size upon watch. One of the Best Christmas Movies According to Mr.McCown: A Muppet Christmas CarolMr.McCown tells us the songs in The Muppet Christmas Carol may bring a tear to our eyes. Maybe not. Power through the young jokes and excessive narration because Michael Caine’s performance as Scrooge will make up for the sluggish retelling. The friendliest version of the Christmas Carol also features talking cabbages, a CGI baby-faced ghost of Christmas past that does not at all fit into the muppet world, and many other unique appearances to make for an odd, but still heartwarming tale.Honorable Mentions: Home Alone, A Christmas Story, National Lampoon’s Christmas VacationBy Charlotte Suttee
