Veloci-Past Time For You To Watch These Movies: Good “Bad” Films to Watch

By: Charisma Ganye

Have you ever watched a movie so bad that you couldn't stop watching it? Something about the bad acting, weird dialogue, or just lackluster plot that enthralls you and you can't look away. Quarantine and the uncertainty of everything aided my crippling movie addiction and introduced me to a number of those. Out of the maybe 80 movies I watched, here are 4 good "bad" movies.

Love, Rosie (1h 42m)

Alex and Rosie spend the night out together, bonding before Alex has to leave for America.

Rated: R

Plot: Best friends Alex and Rosie have known each other since they were children. Through thick and thin, they have been there for each other. When it comes to love and relationships, they choose everyone other than each other. Their relationship is then put through the ringer when Alex and his family move to America.

Rotten Tomatoes: 32%

IMDb: 7.2/10

Reaction: I have watched a LOT of romantic comedies, most of which I didn’t like for one reason or another. I can’t say this about Love, Rosie. This movie quite honestly isn’t even bad. It’s a good story with great actors that I am willing to rewatch over and over again because I liked it that much. There’s something about the slow burn of it all that draws you in. Yes, because it is a romantic comedy you know how it’s going to end, BUT the movie makes sure to not be a cookie cutter romantic story which makes it worth the watch. This movie embodies the type of gooey romance that I may or may not believe is real, but will eat up like a cup of cereal (which is the proper way to eat cereal). I finished this movie smiling more than I’d like to admit.

Hot Rod (1h 28m)

Rod, now dressed for the event, prepares for his jump over 15 buses.

Rated: PG-13

Plot: Andy Samberg plays amateur accident-prone stuntman, Rod Kimball. Always trying to prove himself to his disappointed stepfather, Rod continues to spar with him in small weekly fights. After his stepfather gets sick, Rod plans his most extravagant stunt to date trying to raise money for the surgeries his stepfather will need.

Rotten Tomatoes: 39%

IMDb: 6.7/10

Reaction: Watching Andy Samberg, with his outrageous hair of the time, as an absolute nimrod trying his best to woo a chick, who is objectively way too attractive for him, is already a pretty funny watch. Then you add in the stunts. The stunts are what seal the deal. That and Rod’s ragtag group of friends who say some of weirdest/ funniest lines throughout it. Rod feels like a mix of Napoleon Dynamite with his awkwardness and Andy Dwyer’s brains which makes it a funny watch. Watching the stunts happen and go wrong continually is like watching America’s Funniest Videos, but actually funny.

The Velocipastor (1h 15m )

Doug angrily and unwillingly begins shifting into his dinosaur self after a failed exorcism.

Rated: PG-13

Plot: After Priest Doug Jones’ parents die in a car accident, he finds himself on a journey of self- discovery in China where he mysteriously gains the ability to turn into a dinosaur. Deciding to use this new found power for good, Doug along with his new friend, Carol, travel around the world killing criminals, including drug- peddling ninjas.

Rotten Tomatoes: 54%

IMDb: 5.1/10

Reaction: God, or some entity from above, probably aliens, must have decided that the world needed this movie. That has to be the only explanation for the low budget masterpiece that is this film. I knew this movie was going to be good 30 seconds in. No movie I have watched has ever hooked me in the way this one did in less than a minute. The story just gets better with the introduction of people like Frankie Mermaid, and some of the weirdest scenes in a film I have ever seen. This is now unironically one of my favorite movies I’ve ever watched. “Cinematic masterpiece” are the only words that can be used to describe the film as a whole. I think it was Shakespeare himself who said, and I quote, “Man, this movie is super dope,” and I wholeheartedly agree.

Shark Night 3D (1h 25m)

The gang begins their travel to the lake house of terrors.

Rated:PG-13

Plot: 7 college students pack up their stuff to spend what should be a fun weekend at a lake house- that is until they become subject to shark attacks.

Rotten Tomatoes: 19%

IMDb: 4/10

Reaction: There are few movies that can put Jaws (a movie I have totally seen) to shame. This is indeed one of them. Horror, comedy, drama- this is all packed into an 85 minute “terror” fest. You laugh, you cry, and you get an absolute banger of a song sung by the cast at the very end of the movie.  Sharks living in lakes? Yup, that’s a thing. People being able to survive not one but TWO shark attacks? Also a thing. Trying to get involved in fisticuffs with a shark that you now have beef with? You guessed it! It too is in this movie. In reality, this movie is just really fun to watch with friends and talk about how bad it is while laughing a substantial amount. Also, sharks seem to roar in this universe which makes it all the better.
