Jenks Women's Basketball Is Turning It Around
By: Brayden Dodson
Jenks women's basketball has struggled for over a decade, with some seasons ending with only four wins. Last year the team ended with their best record since 2011, with a win total of 15 games. With former Jenks guard Jill Twiehaus committing to Rice University there is going to be hole ware the team has to fill for this coming season, but assistant coach Amanda Taylor this shouldn’t be a problem.
Taylor acknowledges that the team has had some rough years in the past, and is ready to get her team back to that winning standard that Jenks used to have.
“Last season we won 15 games, which is the most wins since 2011… there were some seasons where we only won four games, so we are definitely heading in the right direction,” said Amanda Taylor
The 1,500 point scoring machine and two sport athlete in Basketball and Track, Twiehaus committed to Rice University in November of last year. In 2023 Twiehaus averaged 20 PPG, 5.4 Rebounds, and 4 steals a game and led Jenks to qualify for the area tournament which guarantees a D1 scholarship to anyone. Coach Taylor knows that they are going to have no issue, even considering losing their best player due to graduation.
“We are a young team, three of our best players got varsity minutes as freshmen last year and that experience will pay off” Said Amanda Taylor.“We are currently forming a new team identity without [Jill Twiehaus], which has taken some adjustment.”
And with some young players coming back to the team with varsity experience Jenks will be a scary force in the coming years, but I wouldn't count them out this year either as Coach Taylor believes that with pieces coming together opponents should not underestimate Jenks.
“We are returning several players with varsity experience, and we are in our 3rd year under head coach Will Seymour. Those factors make us a team people shouldn’t underestimate” Said Amanda Taylor.
Overall I’m excited to see how Jenks women's basketball does this season as they are ready to make a push and get back to that winning standard that they had a decade ago. Go cheer on your Lady Trojans at the season opener on December, 3rd at Northwest Classen at 6:30pm.
