Kendall's Krafts: Halloween Addition
By: Kendall Webber
In the depths of the kitchen, where tragedy occurs. Poison apples, witch fingers, and Dirt n’ Worms. Bakers come to face their Fears, to beat the 5-minute timer. This is Your host Kendall Webber; welcome back to this season of Kendall’s crafts. In this story, we baked six holiday goods; they are ordered from least difficult to most difficult, and include a scale from 1-10.
Let’s start off this season of Kendall’s crafts with the least difficult of them all, the chocolate ghost strawberries. In the video, they added milk chocolate on top to make the faces as did I and it ended up really cute. I loved the idea of the whole strawberry and thought I had to try it. They ended up so cute and I love how the texture adds to the effect. Now when making these a problem that I did have was the chocolate not wanting to stay warm, so it made it difficult to make the chocolate smooth or get on the strawberry completely. It did take about 20+ minutes to make this including design time. The only reason it took so long was that the chocolate didn’t want to stay warm as I mentioned before. I’d rate this whole craft a 9/10 just because of how cute it ended up and because it wasn’t even too hard to make.
The second least difficult is the witch finger. So in the Video it shows how they dipped a pretzel in green candy melts and then added different colored chocolate for the wrinkles and fingernails. You think it wouldn’t take too long but man we’re both wrong. The chocolate refused to melt within 60 seconds and didn’t take well to mixing with green food coloring. The green didn’t turn out as vibrant as I had hoped but adding more didn't seem to work either. The chocolate didn't like staying warm to where it’d be an easy dip, shake, and put down on the pretzel. This craft probably took about 10-15 minutes including the times I had to reheat it, add coloring, details, and time to cool down. I'd rate this craft a 6/10. It has this rating because it ended up cute and also because it tasted pretty good.
Next on the list would be the dirt’ n worms cupcakes. I sadly did lose the video in which I saw these in but to sum the whole craft up was they made mini cupcakes, crushed up Oreos in a plastic bag and dipped the frosting in it, then added gummy worms onto the top to give the whole idea of dirt’ n worms. It honestly was incredibly easy to do but I'd say a little more difficult because I did have to make the cupcakes. But I'd rate this craft a 10/10. Everything ended up so cute and looked amazing next to the other crafts!
As I mentioned in the craft above I had to make mini cupcakes and thought it'd be a wonderful idea to make mini versions of the other cupcake ideas I found in the videos. So for this cupcake idea, I made a ghost-themed mini cupcake. In the video, it shows them making a ghost out of fondant and adding dots of chocolate for eyes, and throwing that on top of the frosting of the cupcakes. I immediately thought that was on my list. When I tell you this was probably my favorite thing I made this whole craft season I mean it! Now the craft did take about 10 minutes to make just because shaping fondant is harder than I expected and because it was hard to make the fondant stay in place on the cupcake. This craft turned out to be a 1000000/10, just because I love the whole ghost sheet trend.
The second to last most difficult to make was the spider cupcakes. In the video, it shows them adding chocolate-dipped pretzels as the legs of the spiders and a chocolate ball of some sort as the bodies of the spider. When getting stuff from the store I couldn’t find any chocolate-dipped pretzels for some odd reason so I ended up having it make my own which took 17 minutes too long and on top of that I Had to cut them up after being cooled, it took so long for the chocolate to cool down for no reason. But the cupcakes did end up looking good and matching the theme of the crafts. I'd rate this whole craft about a 7/10, it just wasn’t my favorite to make or see on this list.
The last and most difficult thing I had to make on this project was the Carmel poison apples. Now in the video, it shows that they just put chocolate on an apple and called it quits and I thought that was a bit boring so I made it a challenge for myself to make Caramel apples with the poison apple look like snow white. So to start off the process of this whole project I had to start the process of heating the caramel up and rolling the apples in it then throwing in pecans to give it texture. That process alone took about 30-40 minutes alone. While letting them sit I started the process of making the green chocolate for the face of the apple but I had a lot of difficulty with making the color stick to the chocolate again. On top of the difficulty of the color sticking, I struggled once again with keeping the chocolate warm long enough to mix and apply. But once I got the color to stick and the chocolate to stay warm for longer than 2 minutes I finally was able to complete the challenge. I’d rate this around 8/10. This took about an hour completely to make alone including prepping, making, mixing, and cooling times.
At the end of this season, Kendall’s crafts once again reminded me of how the timer just doesn’t exist in 5-minute crafts. Altogether this whole thing may have taken 2 plus hours, not including cupcake-making time. My favorite thing I made was definitely the ghost cupcakes just because look at it. It’s so cute, it also was just fairly easy to make. My least favorite to make was the witch fingers. It just was boring and difficult to heat up the chocolate many many times. But I honestly did enjoy getting more experience with making decorations for baked goods and had fun while making them. Thank you for joining another season of Kendalls Krafts. I'll see you next time or not.
