Quik Reviews, Easy Trip

By Goldie Krautheim, Milly Deyoe, and Katie Russell

Out in the Midwest, gas station food is quite the norm. Here in Oklahoma, we have one of the best gas station chains in the country, Quik Trip. For the past 6 years, we have consistently enjoyed the delicacies inside QT Kitchen and their snack center. We aimed for people's favorites, then went after the irrelevant snacks. This taste test was definitely a trip to Flavour Town. Join us in telling you about our time there. We have ranked 12 items from Worst to Best, so you can know what to and what not to get. #12: Orange Chicken Bite

Summary: This strange-looking long, fried, bright orange snack is an orange chicken bite. After seeing this in the depths of the QT app, I mustered up the courage to try this unique snack. As I approached the roller grill, I started at the orange chicken bite turning slowly on the grill. I picked it up with the plastic tongs and put it in the clear bags provided. It was like a giant chicken strip with a tangy and citrusy crust. To my surprise, it wasn’t terrible. It was a little dry for my liking but I finished eating it and was satisfied. I probably will not be picking this one back up at the roller grill.

#11: Chorizo Mac N Cheese

Summary: Delicious… at first but then after it sits and you take another bite and another, it begins to become a greasy, spicy, and saucy MESS! It made me feel very sick after a while although it could factor in the fact that I was eating the pizza simultaneously. I did like the addition of chorizo. I thought it was super unique and added a lot of flavor. I just wish there wasn’t so much grease because it consumed the entire dish making it unenjoyable.

Price: $3.99

#10: Pork Taco

Summary: Disappointed…. After first trying the brisket taco, I immediately reached for the pork taco yearning for more. Although this one was eaten after and had no toppings which could have factored into this I wouldn’t reach for this myself. The tortilla… soggy. The meat… somewhat crunchy? Overall… lacking flavor. I would like to give it extra points for being somewhat saucy which the other taco lacked. For being a BBQ taco it lacked THAT BBQ taste.

Overall taste: 5/10

#9: Chorizo, Egg, & Cheese Taco

Summary: Fine, but not my favorite. Upon opening the tinfoil it was tightly wrapped in, I was met with a very soggy tortilla. The first impression was poor but I can assure you, it only goes up from here. The eggs weren’t watery and the cheese was melty. The chorizo was hot, well-cooked, and had a little bit of kick that I was looking for. I don’t have a ton to say about this taco, it simply didn’t stand out to me.

Price: $2.69

Overall Impression: 7/10

#8: Turkey Cheese Croissant

Summary: Turkey surrounds the delicious fresh bread perfectly as the cheese melts into your mouth with each bite you take. This sandwich, although a tad bit boring at first, comes with unlimited topping choices. It's sure to win your heart if you are in a quick rush. On the convenient and helpful QT app once you select the sandwich you are brought to a page where you can make the sandwich your own and select what you want to up its game. Keep in mind I added brown mustard, mayo, banana peppers, and jalapenos to mine so that did change my opinion on it. Without it, the sandwich would be quite bland and the lettuce was somewhat questionable. I would get this if I was in a rush but not what I would typically go for in the QT kitchen!

Price: $3.99 *not including toppings*

Score: 7/10

#7: Cinnamon Sugar Pretzel

Summary: An elevated version of the Classic Pretzel. Perfect for someone with a minor sweet tooth. The Cinnamon Sugar pretzel is a dusty and doughy delight. It is not Auntie Annes but it does more than fill the void. You can get the pretzel with some sweet icing, which is usually cold. The bite of the warm pretzel mixed with the cold icing is something you can't recreate. The only downfall is it stales up after about 10 minutes so eat it fast.

#6: Cheese Pizza

Summary: Saucey, cheesy, doughy, crunchy pillow-like pizza. Could you ever believe that this is from a gas station? Not just any ordinary gas station the QT KITCHEN! This pizza is convenient and delicious but it's not perfect. I would say it's even semi-sweet like the chocolate chips. It wasn’t perfect but hey what is anyways? It's also mini and who doesn’t love cute little mini-shaped things? I would recommend ordering from your choice pizza shop first but when in a hurry this is a great option!

#5: Bacon, Egg, & Cheese Grilled Cheese

Summary: This beast of a breakfast sandwich was a unique eating experience. I ordered it on the app with ease. It’s listed at $4.79 but the cashier gave it to me for less, earning it an extra point. When I ordered the sandwich, QT was very busy, the lunch rush was active and it took a little longer than I hoped to receive my grilled cheese. When I got it I immediately dug it. It was nicely cut in half for me and the bun was shining with butter and lightly toasted. Although this isn’t a traditional or the most healthy breakfast food, it sure was delicious. The cheese was melty and the bacon was crisp, all the things I wanted in a breakfast grilled cheese. The only thing I would change about the sandwich would be the grease level. The bun was thoroughly buttered and left me searching for a napkin. I was very satisfied with this item and would order it again!

#4: Brisket Taco

Summary: UNEXPECTED!! Is one of many words I would use to describe this smoky, juicy yet somewhat sweet brisket taco from the awesome and convenient QT grab-and-go and go section! This taco was the perfect ratio between a soft tortilla and its delectable juicy and smoky meat flavor. It wasn’t fatty like you could expect, it was the perfect cut of meat. With yet another selection of toppings ranging from salsa to onions to various peppers. It sets your taco over the top. However, I do have to say it is very hard to add the toppings because they wrap it in foil and wrap the taco like a burrito. Making it very hard to unwrap, add the toppings, and then wrap it back. Making it hard to transport so I ended up in my rush having to give up…

Price: 4.99 (toppings included)

#3: Classic Pretzel

Summary: The Quick Trip kitchen is well known for many items, but one at the top of the snackle list would be their Classic Pretzel. You can walk up to the touch screens and you can select your pretzel of choice. When you choose the classic you can get cheese on the side, which is a very important dip to have with your pretzel. This pretzel comes in a box with a transparent piece of plastic so you can get a preview of the goodness to come. As you open the box you find a pillowy dough, perfectly sprinkled with salt, all twisted into a pretzel knot, and of course your cheese on the side. Easy to pull apart, important to dip it into the cheese. I would say a must-have from QT.

#2: Sausage, Egg, & Cheese Croissant

Summary: The sausage, egg, and cheese croissant is the food that inspired me to go on this journey. I walked into my first-hour history class, smelled the sweet sausage scent, and knew I needed to try this beautiful pastry sandwich. I picked this up and loved everything about it. The sausage was warm and had a nice mix of sweet and savory flavors. The cheese was melty and reminded me of the fake cheese my grandma keeps at her house. The croissant was flakey and golden brown. This is what I want in a breakfast sandwich. I could eat this for breakfast every day. I would like to thank QuikTrip for this wonderful creation.

#1: Strawberry Iced Donut W/ Sprinkles

Summary: The pastry case is a nice light masterpiece usually in the center of your QT. A classic choice is usually chocolate, plain glaze, or as I chose ´pink with sprinkles´. This donut is a great combo of all the elements. Having the strawberry frosting, crunchy sprinkles, and a fluffy base, it creates a great bite. Personally, I believe the best time to get a QT donut is after 3 pm because the price drops to a whopping ¢33.

Price: ¢33

Score: 10/10 only after 3 pm

Throughout this process we’ve learned that QuikTrip is one of the cheapest and most reliable food options. Their ever-changing menu is sure to impress every person who stops in.
