Moisturizers: The Saving Grace of Oklahoma Winds
By: Darby Graff
As the freezing air touches our delicate skin- it begins to crack, peel, and sometimes even burn. The winter v.s. Delicate skin can be an excruciating battle, and oftentimes it seems like there is nothing you can do to win the battle. As someone who has struggled with acne for the past six years, finding a moisturizer that works for you can be extremely hard, but thanks to my extensive field experience, I have tried and thrown away plenty of moisturizers. In this review I will be covering what moisturizers are worth it through their actual moisturizing ability, the texture, and how it reacts to delicate skin.
5. Ole Henriksen C-Rush Brightening Gel Creme
Price- $52
This Ole Henricksen creme does little to actually moisturize your skin, for $52 I should never see a single crack. The moment you put it on your face, it seems like it's working. It makes your skin feel dewy, moist, and all the wonderful things you’re supposed to feel, but the next morning you will wake up with disgusting dry crusties around your mouth. Nobody wants to wake up looking like they just ate a donut.
The texture is very smooth, but jelly-like. It kind of reminds me of rubbing mayo on my face, and I don’t know about you but that makes me want to puke. For something that is supposed to be solving dry skin, I wish it was a little thicker.
I will say it does pretty well with delicate skin, I don’t feel an excruciating pain when I rub it on my face. It doesn’t make me feel like I have lit a flame that’s riddled with jalapenos and rubbed it all over me. However, it just doesn’t do its job to moisturize.
4. CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion
Price- $6-17 (depending on what size you get)
This moisturizer does a pretty good job with moisturizing. Anytime I would ever use it, my skin would never continue to be dry. It’s inexpensive and does its job extremely well. If you get the big one, it will last you a really long time.
I hate the texture of this moisturizer. It is like melted smooshed-together-oatmeal. Every single time I use it, it truly irks every being of my soul. It’s impossible to get out of your nails because it is somehow super wet but also sticky? Pick a struggle, are you liquidy or not? I hate it. I truly wish it was thicker.
This is the most dangerous thing you could put on your skin if it is acne prone and sensitive. It feels like I am rubbing jalapenos mixed with bleach all over me. This lotion has made me tear up more than The Notebook. For this reason, I will never ever use it.
3. Dr. Jart Cicapair Cooling Gel Moisturizer For Redness
Price- $52
I really like this moisturizer overall. It is pretty good at its job to keep your skin moist and bouncy, however, I do sometimes feel like I have to overuse it to make sure that It will truly get the job done. I don’t want to have to do this with any moisturizer that is over the price of $15.
Part of the reason why I think this moisturizer is a little suspicious is its ability to keep a dewy face because of its texture. When something is a gel or a creme I feel like it’s too light to actually do anything. When it’s a little bit thickened I feel like there is nothing that could get it to fall off- I could have the most intense fever dreams of my life and I know that it is deep into my skin.
This is not at all burning, in fact, it is quite the opposite, it’s coooooolinnggg. This one has the best feeling. When I put it on my face I never have to wait and wonder if it will start burning my skin off, because I can feel it immediately cooling everything down. It is quite lovely.
2. Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Hylaronic Cloud Cream Hydrating Moisturizer
Price- $54
Water drench doesn’t truly describe how impeccably dewey this moisturizer makes your face feel. It feels like your face has been swallowed by a luxuriously swampy monster, in the best way humanly possible. The moisture is long lasting and you don’t need to apply all that much to get the full luxurious experience.
I know I know, you probably already know what I am going to say- IT’S TOO WATERY. Well not really, IT’S JUST A LITTLE BIT TOO WATERY. I’m telling you if it were just a little bit thicker it would be the most amazing moisturizer in the market. You would truly feel like a daring dewey defender, but the amount of water makes you feel more like a weird wet whale. Not super amazing.
This moisturizer doesn’t burn in the slightest and to be completely honest that’s all that really needs to be said.
1. Laneige Water Bank Blue Hyaluronic Intensive Moisturizer
Price- $40
Introducing the most hydrating, moisturizing, and humidifying cream that I have ever used. I have never experienced something that completely brings my skin back to life after a treacherous day in windy Oklahoma. It has been my savior this winter.
FINALLY A MOISTURIZER THAT IS THICK. I fear that I love this moisturizer not based on its actual ability to rejuvenate my dry skin, but on its heavenly texture. It makes me happy. Every. Single. Time. I. Use. It. I know that it will stay stuck to my face no matter what. If I have the most distressing and horrible sleep of my life that leaves me upside down on my bed, it is not leaving my face.
This is the best moisturizer I have ever used for sensitive skin. Even on my driest, flakiest, and days when my face has zero elasticity- it still doesn't burn when I apply it to my skin. It is truly a medical marvel.
Finding products that work for you is one of the best things ever. I hope that my acne expertise will lead you to make a purchase decision that you truly love.
